Red Band ‘”Deadpool” trailer needs to express some rage

Fox has released the first official, definitely R-rated look at Deadpool. Starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular Merc with a Mouth, the film is already establishing a tone that’s decidedly different from what we’ve gotten in previous superhero movies. The footage here is largely what audiences at Comic Con saw a few weeks ago, with only a few minor exceptions.

But how is it? So far, so good! The jokes are funny (I hope/imagine that scene with T.J. Miller is just some extended riffing between the two) and the action looks solid. While I enjoy the character, I’ve never understood the rabid fandom that Deadpool has somehow garnered within the comic book industry. However, I am all for having our superhero movies be different and interesting enough from one another and this trailer gives me hope that we’ll see the movie deliver on that potential promise.

Directed by Tim Miller, Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T. J. Miller, Ed Skrein, Brianna Hildebrand and Gina Carano. It will release on February 12, 2016.
