Briefly: Warner Bros. has decided to officially release the first look at Suicide Squad after a culprit (worthy of inclusion in said squad) leaked the trailer after the studio’s Comic-Con panel on Saturday. The trailer spends a lot of time focusing on Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller, Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, all before giving us a quick glimpse at Jared Leto’s take on the Joker.
The trailer gets points for very quickly setting up a different offering from what we’ve seen from the Marvel side of superhero movies, but just not sure if I’m buying what WB is selling at this point – indicative of a larger issue I have with the DC Cinematic Universe’s tonal approach. I do get the sense that Deadshot and Harley Quinn might be the leads of the film, with the former being the relative straight man in a world that’s a lot crazier than the one he’s used to dealing with.
Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, will release on August 5, 2016 and stars Margot Robbie, Cara Delevigne, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Jim Parrack, Ike Barinholtz, Adam Beach, Common, Jay Hernandez, Will Smith, Viola Davis, and Jared Leto.
