According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, actress Tilda Swinton (!) is in negotiations to play the Ancient One alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange. Fans of the comics will know that the Ancient One, trainer of the next Sorcerer Supreme, has historically been male – but THR reports that Marvel has ‘rethought the role and has now made it female.’
A couple of things here: I love the fact that Marvel is now looking at these roles and trying to change them up to be more diverse. There’s nothing in the history of the Ancient One that would radically change if the character was male or female, so why not change it?! Especially if you’re going to get an actress of Tilda Swinton’s caliber to join.
This casting decision is on the same scale as Marvel’s initial attempts to get Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Strange (ie, going after a strong actor, who has incredible screen presence). This bodes well for the studio, who continually make inspired choices when it comes to their casting – which is exciting when you’re one who likes to follow the production of these movies. This is just some truly fun and lovely news.
Doctor Strange will star Benedict Cumberbatch, is directed by Scott Derrickson, and will release on November 4, 2016.
