In celebration of the birthday of the Caped Crusader’s most notorious villain, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has revealed how actor Jared Leto will look as the Joker when he makes his big screen debut next year and . . . let’s just say it’s certainly a look.

There’d been some rumors that Leto’s look was going to be inspired by the Joker’s most recent appearance in ‘Endgame’ (the fantastic Batman arc that writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo are currently wrapping up), but this is something else entirely. There’s some speculation online that the HAHAHA is actually typography lifted from The Killing Joke or another Batman storyline, but Leto’s pose is very much lifted from another famous Killing Joke moment (as seen above).
This look gives me pause, especially when it comes to how the other characters in the movie will look. I’d venture to guess Margot Robbie will probably look more like this version of Harley Quinn instead of this version.
I’m trying not to be snarky, as a photo isn’t the best indicator of a finished movie’s final quality, but I’m decidedly not a fan of this look. It comes across as trying far too hard (damaged across your forehead?! Come on, bro), but at the same time – it’s certainly an interpretation of how Leto probably views the character and I have to congratulate him for following through on his vision.
Too bad it’s not one that I’m all that crazy about.
