Things have been quiet lately as Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s AMC adaptation of Vertigo Comics’ Preacher slowly chugs its way into production, but tonight, Deadline broke the first real, official bit of news and for fans, it is a doozy.
Actress Ruth Negga, better known nowadays as Raina from Agents of SHIELD, has been cast as Tulip O’Hare, the gun toting, hard as nails female lead. I am really happy about this announcement for a few reasons:
1. Negga is a tremendous actress and carried some of the more boring installments of AoS during its struggling first season. She wasn’t a name I even considered when I have engaged in numerous fantasy castings with my friends, but, now that she is cast, I can only see her absolutely killing the role. So that is a big win after a long stretch of silence from the production.
And, Number 2, Tulip O’Hare is going to be a woman of color and that is sure to add all sorts of extra layers to the balls-out crazy tale that is Preacher. The Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon opus tackled all sorts of sexual and racial issues through the lens of comic book weirdness and Negga’s casting, to me at least, indicates that Rogen and Goldberg don’t plan on sidestepping any of that.
So, now that we have our first official bit of casting, how are we feeling about this adaptation? Surely the casting of Jessie and Cassidy aren’t very far behind, so who do we want to see join Negga on screen? Personally, I’m more than okay with Dominic Cooper taking on Jessie and, gun to my head, I would say Domhnall Gleeson or maybe Robert Sheeran take on my favorite Irish bastard vampire.
Preacher is being developed by Rogen and Goldberg for AMC and will be directed by the duo before turning over showrunning duties to Breaking Bad alumni Sam Catlin.
