Three stars of the comic book world. Three runaway helots. Three, written by Kieron Gillen, pencilled by Ryan Kelly, and colored by Jordie Bellaire, creates a compelling narrative of slaves in Sparta, their interplay with their masters, and a meta response to that other tale of Spartan culture and martial prowess. For a small series, spanning five issues, Three packs punches both literal and figurative; Gillen’s incisive dialogue and the bloody, brilliant art of Kelly and Bellaire pair to present a history-based, mythic comic bent on making readers think. Not an easy or quick story to read, Three is meant to be lingered over and stands up to re-reads–the first time for the broad lines of plot and character, the second time for small, significant details, and many times again.
