Marvel, like the rest of America, loves their British actors. But that love looks to be at an all time high with Doctor Strange. When we last checked in with the Sorcerer Supreme’s silver screen adaptation, Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast as the titular Strange, but a new bit of casting news says that fellow Brit Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to join the film in some form.
Hollywood Reporter postulates the actor might be playing the villain of the film (likely Baron Mordo), but then states that there might be conflicting reports on that bit. If Ejiofor joins the cast, this will be the Oscar nominee’s first comic book movie and would reunite him with Cumberbatch, as the two shared a few scenes in 12 Years a Slave together.
While I felt that Cumberbatch’s casting was strong (albeit maybe a bit on the nose), Ejiofor’s potential involvement makes me excited to see that Mavel is thinking outside the box when it comes the rest of the cast. THR states the actor is in early talks, but considering how many names were thrown around before Strange himself was cast – forgive me if I don’t hold my breath on this.
Doctor Strange is directed by Scott Derrickson and will release on November 4, 2016.
