From the moment it was first announced at Comic Con in 2013, director Zack Snyder has been looking to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns as a inspiration for his version of the caped crusader in the upcoming trial of Batman v. Superman. However, a new rumor gives evidence to the fact that we might be seeing more of Miller’s DNA in the film than we first thought.
Variety reports an on-set extra has revealed that ‘the character of Robin is now female’ and that she’ll be played by actress Jena Malone. It doesn’t take the world’s greatest detective to figure out that Malone (who recently dyed her hair red) will probably be playing some variation of Carrie Kelley, the Robin that was heavily featured in The Dark Knight Returns. Furthermore, Malone has been seen on the set of the film.
A Robin of some kind (whether it was an older version of Nightwing or the like) has been rumored to be a part of the script for quite some time, but with more and more evidence adding up that Snyder is appropriating from The Dark Knight Returns, it makes sense that this Robin would be the Carrie Kelley version. Malone is a great actress (her take on Johanna Mason was one of my favorite parts of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and has history with Snyder, as the two worked together on Sucker Punch back in 2011.
Malone would be a welcome departure from the past cinematic version of Robin, as she could bring a whole new dimension to the character. This is one rumor I’m hoping pans out to be true.
