Captain America 3 to loosely adapt Civil War, Robert Downey Jr to co-star

Well I don’t think we ever anticipated this.

Devin Faraci of Badass Digest broke some major news tonight*: Those rumors of Robert Downey Jr returning for Iron Man 4 last week were sorta, kinda true as the actor will return for what’s been described as a ‘co-starring’ role in Captain America 3, which will look to adapt elements** of the classic Marvel storyline, Civil War, which sees Iron Man and Captain America go head-to-head over a piece of legislation forcing heroes to register their secret identities.

Devin’s story has a ton more spoilers that we won’t report here, but please do go and read his article – as he’s got some great theories as to where the Marvel Cinematic Universe heads from here. I’ve been reading Devin’s reports for months and he’s been hinting that there were massive changes coming, but I never thought we’d get change on this scale.

Needless to say, it’s an exciting time to be a Marvel fan.

*Technically it was Variety, but multiple film bloggers have confirmed Devin had the story first. Credit where credit is due.

**I stress that specifically because a straight-up adaptation of that storyline is impossible, as Disney/Marvel don’t have the rights to a lot the characters they’d need to do a direct translation. Marvel Studios will do what they do best and use foundation and themes of the story as the base of the plot for Cap 3.
