After months of speculation Fox has reassembled The Fantastic Four for the big screen.
Sources are reporting that Kate Mara (House of Cards) has signed a deal with Fox to star in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. Michael B. Jordan has been attached to play Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the film for months, rejoining his Chronicle director Josh Trank. Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now) has been offered the role of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, though a deal has yet to be signed. The biggest surprise is Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin), rounding out the cast as Ben Grimm/Thing. Bell is reportedly on board and is expected to receive an official offer in the coming days.
The first thing Fantastic Four fans might notice is that the cast is noticeably younger than their current comic book counterparts. According to Variety this is because the film is based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four series that similarly rebooted the team back in 2004. That team also featured fresher faces as well as a new origin. If true this would continue the trend started by The Amazing Spider-Man of using Marvel’s Ultimate universe as a source to reboot an existing property.
You might not recognize all or any of the new Fantastic Four cast as Fox has foregone the marquee names for their second go at the franchise. Don’t let that fool you into thinking the studio doesn’t believe in the project. As we reported last month Fox is already looking to combine the franchise with the popular X-Men films. Each of the actors chosen have outstanding work and tremendous buzz surrounding them. Fox clearly believes they have assembled a team of tomorrow’s movie stars. We might see a bigger name cast as the villain (rumored to be Doctor Doom) in the coming weeks but only time will tell.
Marvel’s first family will debut in theaters on June 19th, 2015.
