A mere two months before he is set to storm onto screens in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes is starring in a five issue miniseries from current Cap scribe Rick Remender, set during the 1960’s, at the height of the Cold War, as reported by USA Today and my new place of employment, Newsarama. The series, described by Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort as almost a Friday The 13th film, will cast Bucky as the book’s antagonist as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Ran Shen (known to Cap readers as The Iron Nail, current heavy of Remender’s newest arc) scramble to collect two scientists who developed a formula that could tip the scales of power in the world after they have fallen into the hands of the nefarious HYDRA. Enter the Winter Solider, who is deployed by the Russians to derail S.H.I.E.L.D’s plans.
“He’s a force of nature.”, says Remender of Bucky. “He was a tool who had very little control of his own mind, but I will be exploring how Bucky Barnes is underneath all of it still.”. Even though Captain America is still in deep freeze when the miniseries takes place, Remender teases that the events of the book will reverberate through the pages of his monthly Captain America series while serving as “a love letter to Jim Steranko S.H.I.E.L.D. comics.”
Issue 1 of Winter Soldier: The Bitter March, with art by Roland Boschi, will hit shelves Feburary 2014.
