As Nick Fury said at the end of Marvel’s The Avengers: “They’ll come back.”
Disney announced today that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct a sequel to his 1.5 billion dollar blockbuster, Marvel’s The Avengers. As if that news wasn’t big enough Disney Chairman Bob Iger also announced that Whedon will be creating a television series set in Marvel cinematic universe for the ABC network as well. No word on what that series will be but I would expect more information in the near future.
Though no formal announcements have been made we can assume that most of the principal cast will return for The Avengers 2. Actors who have signed multi-film contracts include Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk/Bruce Banner), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). Noticeably absent from that list is Robert Downey Jr. whose contract runs dry after next years Iron Man 3. Downey will either sign what will surely be a very large contract to return to the role he made famous or he will step down and Marvel will (in Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige‘s words) “James Bond” the character by finding a replacement actor.
There is no official release date yet however a quick look at Marvel’s release schedule reveals the summer of 2015 to be the obvious choice.
As it currently stands, Marvel Studios’ release schedule looks like this:
- Iron Man 3 – May 3, 2013
- Thor: The Dark World – November 8, 2013
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier – April 4, 2014
- Guardians of the Galaxy – August 1, 2014
- Avengers 2 and Ant-Man: TDB
So what do you think of Disney’s announcement? Who else would you have liked to see take the helm of The Avengers 2? And most importantly if you had to recast Tony Stark who do you think could fill Iron Man’s giant metal shoes? Sound off in the comments below!
